Images and Graphics

There are two main formats for graphics and images: GIF and JPG.

The GIF format uses a 8 bit colour scheme.  GIF files are compressed.  This format is most appropriate for graphics that contain large amounts of contiguous colours. Typically the GIF format is used for icons and diagrams.

The JPG format uses a 24 bit colour scheme.  It is more appropriate than GIF for graphics where colour quality is important.  Generally speaking, JPG is more appropriate for photographs and detailed drawings.
