Labelling Tool Tips

The purpose of a tool tip is to remind users of the function of the control to which it refers.  Users may wish to quickly scan the tool tips for a set of related controls.  Therefore it is important to take care over the wording of tool tips and also to keep the wording brief.  As a rule of thumb no more than 4 words should be used.  Lengthy explanations are likely to go unread or slow the user’s interaction.

Where possible, contextual information regarding the target of the function (such as the destination of a print function) should also be included in the tool tip.
