User Requirements Analysis

Background

Technological advances offer great opportunities to organisations in terms of providing capabilities and supporting processes in ever more efficient and effective ways. Key to harvesting these opportunities, however, is a clear understanding of the human link - the user.

User considerations affect many points in the traditional product lifecycle including design, purchase, installation, usage and maintenance. Producing effective products requires that users, their values, behaviours and needs are understood. Achieving such an understanding requires consideration of the organisational, task and environmental conditions within which user and product will function and interact.

Our Approach

An important aspect of analysing user requirements is to choose an appropriate approach which will provide the desired information. Approaches vary in the amount and depth of information that can be obtained, and also in the level of intrusiveness to the user. Common approaches include:

  • Focus Group;

  • Structured Interview;

  • Observational Analysis;

  • Questionnaire.

Accessing Users

To ensure the quality of the information obtained during user requirements activities, it is important to obtain access to the right users.

Corporate Solutions has experience in profiling required user types, and in securing access to the right user groups from organisations or sections of the general public.

Focusing on Tasks

To obtain accurate and reliable information, it is important to focus user responses around actual or prospective tasks. Users should discuss their requirements in relation to the goals they wish to achieve and the activities they undertake to accomplish those goals.

Stimulus materials used in requirements gathering should reflect the need to focus on tasks, goals and activities. Stimuli may include models, prototypes, photographs and images or verbal descriptions, and also extend to the questions used by the analyst.

Presenting Results

Corporate Solutions works closely with organisations to identify the best way to gather, analyse, interpret and present the findings of any user requirements analysis. This will ensure that you can derive most value from the results.

Our Experience

Our consultants are experienced in a range of techniques and analytical methods and can communicate with users at all levels of an organisation to identify and understand their requirements in detail. Recent projects have been conducted across industry sectors including police, health, legal, utility and telecommunications markets.
